Other Key topics which might be of interest to the case
Its important that students know that there is an infection control policy and routine screening is done. The policy of screening admissions is currently based several categories of admission for example "high risk" areas of the hospital (set out in the policy document see link above), in addition to screening of all patients admitted as emergencies as a requirement as of the of end of March 2011.
The consequence of the above change is that virtually all patients admitted will be screened, this is because emergency admissions form the majority of those to wards classified as “low risk”.
However, students should take on board that screening for MRSA is complicated and not a little contentious. There is a difference of oppinions and the widening of the screening is driven by issues that are not only medical, scientific or economical but also political and perceptional. A huge resource is used to screen for MRSA. At SGH about 3% of patients screened were positive. Only a proportion of positive individuals would get invasive disease; in the remainder the carriage is probably of little consequence.
Students might like to consider what are the underlying objectives and principles of the screening policy. What are the advantages of a "risk-based" or perhaps more accurately a “consequence-based” approach (i.e. high and low risk wards) vs blanket screening of all emergency admissions.
